So Henry was diagnosed as having autism. I am not surprised, really. So many markers BUT he was never stereotypically unaffectionate. He has always been a mama's boy. I wonder if the co-sleeping, extended breastfeeding, slinging forced closeness had any impact.

I feel bad that I hadn't pushed for the label sooner. What's weird is that the entire time I was pregnant with him, having a child with autism was my number one fear. I was so terrified. Dependency and weakness. BUT, while he is truly weird, he is so high functioning I shouldn't even be upset, so I'm not. Really, he's so sweet and
intelligent and pretty, I'm pretty sure he'll be fine.

Silas spent a good portion of today practicing his walking. His crawl is still the faster, more efficient method of movement, but he's getting more proficient every day.

11 months old tomorrow. I can't believe it. I'm going to miss his crawling.

7/15/11 11:23 pm - breaking bad, mormon remix

So tonight Tim is filling me in on his vacation adventures with his Mormon Country Bear family and mentions that his father had said he was in the planning stages of applying for the license to grow marijuana for medical purposes in their backyard garden.

*record scratch*

Apparently, now that it is technically (though perhaps fleetingly) legal in Arizona, Tim's Mormon parents no longer object to the consumption of marijuana for medical reasons, nor do they see how growing it in their backyard for money conflicts with both the official modern interpretation of the Word of Wisdom, but also with the draconian punishments inflicted on poor teenage, drug-addled Tim.

The very first thing out of my mouth would have been an extended rant lambasting them for their cruelty and hypocrisy. But that's a major difference between me and Tim. People like Tim.

I am thoroughly unpleasant and unforgiving in my need for moral/ethical consistency in people's behavior. Tim doesn't give a fuck about morality and ethics; he thinks it's hilarious to imagine his Mormon parent's growing pot for cash next to their watermelons and corn, moving on to cooking meth in a rented trailer, and eventually and inevitably his father busting a cap in some fool and covering the corpse in quicklime.

5/24/11 01:35 pm - hello

After school lets out in June, we are going to Arizona to visit my family for two weeks. Tim is coming along this time. Some of you may recall the last time we went, Tim allowed his family to choose a day for us to do whatever they wanted with them. Their choice turned out to consist of driving a few miles to a desert shooting range with the family, including children and pregnant women, and eating scrambled eggs. Henry shot a hand gun. On the one hand, if anyone can survive the zombie apocalypse, it will be them. That must be something of a comfort. On the other, this time we'll be in town for the Fourth of July. Whatever they have cooked up will be very, very loud.

12/15/10 11:12 am - dont want to jinx it

But this baby is sleeping 5-6 hour blocks at night. This is a feat Henry still has never accomplished.

Best baby ever.

Spooky, right??

12/13/10 03:48 pm - sweetest kid ever

On being asked what he wanted as a reward for getting a perfect score on his spelling test:
"I just want your love."
Seriously, this kid. He wasn't even being a smart-ass about it.
Kid Sarah would have asked for money and Kid Tim would have wanted a gallon of ice cream.
Tim doesn't understand how we managed to raise a Paladin.

12/12/10 07:18 pm - onamission request:

What I made for dinner: roasted lemon/thyme chicken and potato/kale casserole. Also roasted a sweet potato but wasn't hungry by the time it was done. And chocolate walnut cookies for dessert.

Small, potentially interesting updates:
-This baby shaping up to be equally attractive as Henry. Bonus points added for being super mellow. He already weighs about 14 lbs and his neck fat is developing nicely.

-We went to the Nintendo company party last night. There was a brief period of crying beforehand because every dress I tried on looked obscene (34Fs, at this point) but that resolved quickly enough. It was casino-themed, which is unappealing to us, but the food was catered by Tom Douglas (famous local chef who actually was set up at the meat carving area, carving meat) so that part was really awesome. I ate at least 2 lbs of shrimp and tomatillo dip, several mini sliders and fries, tenderloin on cheesy polenta, grilled bread salad, roasted brussel sprouts, salmon, greens beans and feta-topped tomatoes, mini eclairs and coconut cream pies and warm cinnamon sugar donuts topped with vanilla mascarpone.

It occurs to me now that I don't have friends who have babies and I am going to have to do the "finding your tribe" thing all over again. How tedious. I don't wanna do Gymboree!!!

Silas resembles infant Henry to such a disconcerting degree. I keep flipping through Henry's baby pics to compare their features and expressions and it's a little freaky. MVC-238X b8523 birth story (with non-gruesome pics) under cutCollapse )
